Any popular/famous/wonderful fairy tales, myths or legends you can list for me? I want to use folklore, myths and legends in a story I am working on, but all I can think of are Disney fairy tales. I've been googling it for hours and checked the library but can't find what I'm looking for! Could you please list some of your favorite fairy tales, myths and legends for me? Doesn't matter which country or era they're from. Thank you. :)
How accurate are the popular myths and for gender prediction of a fetus? I understand that they are not 100% completely reliable however, just for fun I would like to know if: I was told by my ultrasound tech on the 2nd ultrasound @ 13weeks that according to the "3 line sign" the fetus appears to be a female. So i'd like to know some other common indications: 1. a female fetus' heartbeat is 140 and above (as my babies was) 2. Mothers hair grows less with a female fetus (as mine does) 3. An uncontrollable craving for sweets (as I never eat sweets normally) 4. The disgust to eat salty foods (which I usually love) and last but not least. I am NOT having morning sickness as some of the popular myths state that with a female u should have alot of. This is my 2nd pregnancy so I dont know if that makes any difference, as with my 1st I wasnt sick very often either.
What are popular Roman Myths? For my assignment, I have to summarize a popular roman myth? Do you have any idea besides Romulous and Remus? Next, I have to write a made-up Roman myth. Does anyone know a good topic to write about thank you so much if you can helo
Popular myths, lies and misconceptions exposed.....? 1. Lou Holtz said ND would win 10 games this year. 2. Lou Holtz said Chad Henne would win the Heisman. 3. All the SEC homers said Tenn. will beat Cal because Tenn. is in the SEC and Cal is in the Pac-10. Can anyone add anything to this list, any other b.s. that was out there before the season and has been shot down, debunked and exposed already? I forgot to add the obvious... 4. Michigan is good. Dethklok.. you're right that SEC homers shouldn't assume anything, but they did, I can't remember how many posts I say on YA saying that there is no way Cal, playing in the Pac-10, could hang with a ranked SEC team. Simone- I definitely not a Pac-10 person, I like the Big XII, but are you suggesting that Cal would lose to Alabama, an unranked team, and Auburn, a team ranked lower than Tenn, who almost lost to an unranked K-State team yesterday. I will admit that Florida and LSU probably would beat Cal. Beldin- I agree, but I think it is a little early to count them out, as much as I hate to say it, they will improve. But OU might reclaim their place as Red River champs this year. Korey- No one ever said App. State wasn't a good team, so therefore, not a debunked myth, disproven lie, or misconception.
Are there any popular myths you would like to disprove? I would like to categorically end the myth about men with big feet. I stand 6' 2" (in socks), and have size 12.5 - 13 feet. The myth is sadly not true. I hope you get the gist. Anymore for anymore? Best of order, please! Caitlin:- Do redheads have a higher tolerance to pain???? Murcia:- I think you would be very strange as 'Indifferent Mucia' or 'Battle-worn Murcia'.... LMAO Angel:- Let's be clear..... um,..... It is not microscopic, but it is not macroscopic either..... Basically, it is not in proportion..... but not miniscule.... Christ, do you have a bigger shovel, by any chance? FoG:- 'heard that...... A popular myth is certainly that when you vote, you are voting for change..... LMAO ***Not small just not in proportion LMAO!!!!!!!!! Let this question be a real lesson in how to voluntarily humiliate yourself. I'll be telling you all about my love of whips next! Ohh.......***
What is the origin of the popular myth that the Christian Puritans were "anti-sex"? Indeed, considering the enthusiasm which Puritan theology had for sex as a God-ordained gift meant for pleasure as well as procreation (and the very high birth rates which Puritan colonial New England had in comparison to the other colonies), the modern day assumption by many that the Puritans were "puritanical" in the sense of "anti-sex" seems quite unexpected. How did this misunderstanding of Puritan theology come to be? And is this misunderstanding found throughout the English-speaking world or is this primarily a UK and/or U.S. belief?
Why Are These Diet/Fitness Myths So Popular ? How come more people are familiar with the myths than truth? How come the Atkin's diet is actually considered good? How come it is so popular that low weights and high reps actually tones you? How come I get thumbs-downs for the truth??? I'm pretty annoyed, that's why I'm asking... Oh, of course, the ever popular myth, "eating after 7 p.m. makes you gain weight". Lol Pat xD. Folladj - Yes, low weights, high reps are a myth, they only increase endurance and completely fatigue slow-twitch muscle fibers. As for pilates, the only way to reduce bodyfat (or tone) is through cardio, and most importantly a healthy diet. If the diet is healthy enough and low-calorie, you can usually get away with bad exercise in reducing bodyfat. Also, those people may have done cardio, or already started off with a good amount of muscle, which helps burn bodyfat.
In recent years has their been an organized effort by Catholics to correct popular myths about Catholicism? {These details are purely optional to the question, so a "be cool" to those who seem to complain habitually when a section already labeled "optional" attracts "This is too long!" laments.} * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Or have Catholics simply become more vocal and/or more prepared by their education programs to explain more accurately various Catholic doctrines and practices? In my own experience at least while in the USA and the UK, it seems like I suddenly encountered many lay Catholics able and willing to explain what were often classic diatribes (or at least distorted accusations) against Catholicism in the 50's and 60's. For example: "Catholics worship Mary", "They pray to saints instead of to God", "Catholics believe that one must work to earn salvation." These charges are still tossed about but I get the impression that Catholics are far more comfortable (and capable) addressing these issues than they were in the past. So are Catholics simply doing more to educate themselves or is the Catholic Church promoting and conducting more structured educational programs (perhaps going beyond traditional catechism and dealing with apologetics?)...........or both? Has this been a deliberate goal of the current Pope? No, I'm not a Catholic. I'm just curious about Catholic theological education outside of the seminaries and how it is impacting the laity. I'm getting the impression that the average American Catholic today is better prepared to discuss and explain his/her beliefs than their counterparts of some years ago. In fact, I'm thinking that there may have been significant changes in just the last three years. Am I right? Or have I just seen changes within particular subcultures, such as online forums and secular university campus communities. FR. JOSEPH: Thank you for your response and I'm delighted to see someone of solid educational background participating in this former. Answers from people who actually know what they are talking about it can be in short supply here, all too often. And I am happy to say that despite a lot Catholic-bashing on this forum from the bigots and the clueless, I've seen a great many gracious replies from Catholics doing their best to provide honest explanations. I'm not sure why basic civility and mutual respect is so deficient from those crafting anti-Catholic attacks masquerading as "questions". But the contrast in projecting a sense of class and maturity in the face of ignorance and mockery provides its own answer. So I've appreciated the many Catholics who've answered my questions here.

Why is the December 21st 2012 myth becoming so popular? Ive actually been hearing about it for quite a few years now. I didn't look much up about it till a couple years ago. and it didn't even seem as popular then. Now everybody is hearing about it to the point where they are making a movie about it. wow. I wonder how freaked out this hoax is gonna make people get as time gets closer to 2012.
Who are common modern Vampires in Popular Culture? From a feared monster to a fascinated pop culture icon, Vampires have evolved considerably since their conception. Popular culture has twisted the myth of Vampires into a commonly accepted "creature of the night." In any medium (books, tv, movies, poems, etc), who are some noted modern Vampires in popular culture and what do they contribute to the culture that makes them stand out? Reference links are appreciated.

What is your favorite Conservative myth of the day? I have lots. But, my current favorite goes something like this, "X% of Americans don't pay any taxes at all!" Any student who passed high school civics class could tell specifically and why this wrong, yet it is one of more popular myths among bitter Conservatives. Divine and this is why you didn't pass High School Civics. Social Security and Medicare are federal taxes. Each time you fuel you car, you pay a federal tax. Each time you buy something with a tariff, you pay a federal tax.
Isn't the popular view of the Inquisition a myth? In reality, the inquisition wasn't near as bad as people make it out out to be. It was an effort to eliminate heresy, which is one of the greatest evils. And also, the Church gave them fairer trials than the secular governments did! The Church gave them a chance to repent, and only if they refused were they handed over to the secular authorities to be judged by them. The Inquisitors barely killed anyone. The popular view of it as being mass murder is a myth.
Popular Mechanics' book, debunking the 911 myths, is this the official truth.? I guess it must be, McCain wrote the foreword. I have read it, with an open mind, I wanted it to be true. Sadly it became clear it was written for people who don't check alleged facts. And who are also not very old, or not very bright, an insult to the readers intelligence. This book, more than any other actually written for the purpose, tells me there is a lot that we have not been told, at best, and lied to about, at worst. I have looked everywhere for a decent official explanation of certain anomalies, and despite Popular Mechanics stating that there was "consensus in the engineering world" that it was impact and fire that brought down the Towers, this is not memorialised anywhere, it's a bare faced lie, so why bother reading any further? I did read further, and my worst suspisions were confirmed. So, Mr Stiggo, there's a fact that I have proved wrong, all by myself, there is no "consensus in the engineering world". There are many more lies, mostly by ommission.
Myths? I'm looking for myths? I am looking for some funny and popular myths that you have heard I am aware of the show Mythbusters, but I would be interested in hearing some other myths....btw i am trying to bust the one about sneezing with your eyes closed...i have gotten really close!
Myths About Sexuality? A man boarded an airplane and took his seat. As he settled in, he glanced up and saw an unusually beautiful woman boarding the plane. He soon realized she was heading straight toward his seat. Lo and behold, she took the seat right beside his. Eager to strike up a conversation, he blurted out, "Business trip or vacation?" She turned, smiled and said, "Business. I'm going to the Annual Nymphomaniac Convention in Chicago". He swallowed hard. Here was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen sitting next to him and she was going to a meeting for nymphomaniacs! Struggling to maintain his composure, he calmly asked, "What's your business role at this convention?" "Lecturer," she responded. "I use my experience to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality." "Really, " he said, "what myths are those?" "Well," she explained, "one popular myth is that African American men are the most well endowed when, in fact, it's the Native American Indian who is most likely to possess that trait."Another popular myth is that French men are the best lovers, when actually it is the men of Jewish descent. We have, however, found that the best potential lover in all categories is the Southern redneck." Suddenly, the woman became a little uncomfortable and blushed. "I'm sorry," she said, "I shouldn't really be discussing this with you. I don't even know your name." "Tonto," the man said, "Tonto Goldstein. But my friends call me Bubba."
Baseball Rules Myths? Here is a link to an old web page that shows some popular myths about the rules. For the experienced umpires out there, besides No. 10 (uncaught third strike rule which has been changed) are any of these incorrect? http://www.angelfire.com/ia3/littleleaguerules/rulemyths.htm
Cannabis Facts vs. Myths? Hello, How can I find out the truth about weed? I know that there are web sites out there that say that weed is bad for you, causes brain damage, causes lung cancer, creates phsycotic behavior among youth, ect. Then, there are other web sites that say the exact opposite. They say that studies have been done to disprove popular myths. Those sites say that weed DOESN'T cause brain damage, PREVENTS lung cancer, and is virtually harmless during long term use and doesn't affect a user's state of mind after the high has worn off. My question is which ones are the myths and which ones are the facts. Are drug dealers just throwing these sites together to say that weed isn't bad or are these conclusions drawn from well researched tests? Have scientists proven that cannabis is harmful to the human body, or has the government lied to us to keep weed out of the picture (for mostly financial reasons)?
How did Christianity become more popular than the Roman/Greek Religions? Roman mythology was the dominant religion up until the 4th century, the Roman Emperor Constantine proclaimed Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire. After that, it seems a religion that many believed was true, became a myth. I know this couldn't have happened over night. What is the History of Christianity? How did it become so popular and why did people stop believing in Roman Gods? (educated answers please.)
Atheists: Why did people start circulating the myths of Jesus, and why did they become so hugely popular? I am looking for your theories on this as well as any factual evidence you may have regarding the need for, spread of and infectious popularity of Christianity. Anthropological studies in people's need for religion would be helpful also. Reena: Refresh my memory... what exactly is my kind again? Gabriel: The trouble with a historical Jesus is that there is no contemporaneous history to reflect that this very influential individual performed the supposed miracles in front of the many thousands of people that the bible claims. This, along with the staggering similarities to other pagan traditions at the time, make it apparent that Jesus was just as fictional as Osirus, Horus, Dionysus, Mithras... etc. The unfortunate reality is that there just isn't the evidence to support that there was a man named Jesus who actually preached to people.
Is there a logical explanation for what we term as myths? How did so many cultures develop similar stories concerning fairies, elves, gnomes, leprechans, devas, etc? Why do so many popular children's stories include dragons, fairies, etc? Is there any underlying truth to any of the stories?
Since it’s taking too long for people to become secular, what are some ways to speed up the process? Some new laws restricting proselytizing? Maybe an honesty policy where religious people who are proven liars like creationists and Mormons become convicted felons? Or how about changing the education system so that children are shown that popular religious myths like Noah’s Ark, Adam and Eve and Muhammad’s alleged flying horsey ride to heaven are simply not possible? Would you be OK with stuff like this?
baby's gender myths, any truth to them? Is there a monetary reward to turn in illegal immigrants? Myth or True? Not that I am looking to destroy someone's dream to have a chance to the American Dream, as I personally have illegal acquaintaces trying to have a better life here in the U.S., but I was wondering if there really exist a monetary reward offered by the Homeland Security Office or the U.S. Immigration or some other agency - to turn-in illegal immigrants... such as you receive $50 for every person they successfully deport. I've heard of stories but is it true or this is a popular myth?
Why is the "Anchor Baby" Myth So Popular?? Fact: A child born in the US is a US citizen unless their parents are foreign diplomats. The anchor baby can't sponser a parent until they are a adult. Everything else you read in here about anchor babies is a total myth. Having a baby does Not automatically let the illegal parents stay or make it more easy to get legal and does Not bring any more govt welfare benefits that a US citizen can get. And is it so hard to get it that most illegals love their children born in the US just like most US citizens love their children? Just common sense! Sigy, La Senorita de los Bridges [To Abusive Reporters: I am copying this question so if it is removed I will just protest your abusive reporting behavior to Customer Care and post this again] no_anchor_babies may we have sources please? tm99 why do you call me Ms. Smart Behind?
According to popular Myth? Sperm is supposed to be good for the skin. If this is true how come mens hands are not soft and supple?
