Urban myths when it comes to girls; roses, chocolates etc.; good ideas? Is turning up with any of the above really something that a girl would appreciate. Would a girl be overjoyed you'd made the effort for a little classic romanticism or would she simply raise one eyebrow and wonder what I was up to? Any views or advice would be brilliant ladies, cheers.
What silly myths or urban legends have you believed in? Did you believe that wet hair or wet feet can actually make you sick? How about eating chocolate gives you zits? Or that making silly faces will make your face freeze like that? Did you believe that there was actually a serial killer waiting with a meat hook down your local lovers lane?

Do you know any common urban motoring related "Urban Myths"? For example the one where people think that they have 14 days grace to still drive on the road in a vehicle where the tax has just run out. Or the one where people think it is OK to drive an untaxed/uninsured/not MOTed vehicle home from where they just bought it from. Any others?

Urban Myths surrounding The Aberfan Disaster? I'm sure years ago in a Sunday tabloid supplementary magazine's "Isn't it Weird and Unexplained" section, I saw something talking about a boy who was amongst the 116 children killed when the Aberfan waste tip slid down the mountain and engulfed his school, way back in 1966. Apparently the child had drawn many pictures (they were printed in the magazine) of fire engines and police scrabbling over a huge pile of rock. He also drew pictures of clocks that all read 9.15 - the time of the disaster. Does anyone else know about this? Was it a hoax created by a desperate parent or were these drawings legitimate? Are there any websites that go into this further? Are there any more urban myths surrounding the event?
What are some of your favourite urban legends or myths? I'm going to start writing stories based on mythology and legends, so I need some starting ideas. What are some of your favourites that you would be interested reading about? Titles help, but detailed responses would be appropriate. Post links if necessary. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows some good websites to post stories on (besides FictionPress.com) they would be welcome as well. Thanks in advance. Thanks. Where can I read these? Direct links, if possible.

Photography and urban myths? Are there any myths or urban legends surrounding people and their photographs? For example, what if someone's photo repeatedly turns out signigicantly distorted? Even with digital cameras? Or if shadows appear on or around the person's portrait repeatedly?
What is the scariest urban myth you've ever heard? I was totally freaked out by a book called (I think) Scariest Urban Myths. I made the mistake of reading about bathroom myths and I spent at least a week checking the toilet for creepy crawlies. Which wasn't helped when a @#$%^& earwig crawled up on the seat I had just vacated! Have you ever heard an urban myth that scared the hell out of you so badly that you still sleep with a nightlight?
Phobias from myths or urban legends? Do you know of anyone or have a story of someone that has been affected severely by a myth or urban legend? Or that has gotten a phobia from them?
Why do so many people blindly trust urban legends/ Internet myths, etc? I see so many questions on here in which someone is terrified over some nonsense - Why do so many people not question the information they read/see? I am not talking about politics - I am not trying to insult anyone. I think that needs to be kept in its venue. If that is how you feel then please, do it in a intelligent way to a question suited to your choice. Otherwise..it is all just hot air.
Urban Myths-peanut test? Supposedly a bowl of peanuts left on a bar were tested and there were traces found of urine from several people, did this survey ever take place or is it an urban myth, kinda puts you off nibbling the peanuts doesn't it? Don't know about guys but plenty of women don't wash their hands after going to the loo, yuk
Urban Myths/legends - how do they really work? Do you have a favourite? Urban Myths fascinate me how they are known the world over and only ever vary very slightly. How does this Chinese Whispers on such a massive scale really work? My favourite is the one where a woman returns to her car at the supermarket late one night only to find a man waiting there; who tells her he chased away some youths who were acting suspiciously around the car. He pressures her for a lift to the train station and she reluctantly agrees and puts his briefcase in the boot. Feeling nervous she asks him to watch her reverse out of the parking space - she then takes off. Later remembering the briefcase she opens it to find rope, duct tape and a large knife... I must have heard that at least 3 times! All in the guise of it being true! Urban Myths/legends - how do they really work? Do you have a favourite? Thanks :)
Urban Myths - when did you first hear of them.? what's the first time you realised a story was an urban myth only. The first ever was supposed to be something about a boy and a dolphin, and the boy dies and its dolphin friend pines away to death for him. The first one I remember was England going out of the world cup in 1990 on a missed penalty, and various fans were supposed to have the ball from when it went into the crowd. I think it was subsequently shown that the ball was retrieved by a ball boy and given to the ref who walked off with it. My brother told me about urban myths, I beleived the kidnapped kid one at first, but then I thought 'why is this not on TV'? It was about the time of the Sara Payne abduction, so it would have been on TV
best urban myths from your school? at my school, we had the swimming pool Where A Boy Belly Flopped From The Top Board And Split His Stomach Open. nothing new in that- most schools have had this boy. we also had That Boy Has A Fake Penis Cos A Dog Bit It Off, and that Girl had Sex With her dog (possibly the same one??), That Girl Has Been in Prision, and That Boy Is A Satanist. (i went to a nice school, too). there was also The Chair Someone Lent Back In and Slipped And Cracked Their Head Open and Died, just like the teachers always warned you would happen. there was also The Haunted Classroom, someone saw the ghost once. and the building Someone Jumped Off For A Dare And He Died. Also The Teacher Who Is Secretly Married To A Girl. so what were/are the best urban myths from your school???
Anyone have any scary Urban Myths? So my friends and I ,We like to read urban myths does anyone know any websites with alot of them besides Halloween Web and does anyone have any Urban Myths they want to share?
Can anyone recommend good (scientific) literature on urban myths? Hello fellow askers and answerers. I'm a social studies undergraduate currently working on a thesis about links between folklore and urban myths. Up till now, I have been unable to find some decent literature on the subject of urban myths; "decent literature" meaning "no scary urban fairy tale collections". My interest focuses on books that examine how urban legends come to life, how they're being spread and how they adapt to different local settings. I would be glad if someone could help me finding some books on the subject! Thanks in advance :) Snopes sure is a nice webpage, but at it's core it is just a "true or not?" collection of urban myths. I'm rather looking for material about the _dynamics_ behind the emergence of urban myths.
Herp keepers: Most annoying urban myths? After being told the story about the person with the python who lay beside them on the bed to measure them up by the FIFTH person, of course swearing blind it was true and hearing it from a "friend of a friend" I am literally ready to slap the next person who tells me that "swear to god totally true" story. That story REALLY gets on my nerves. That and ignorant people asserting to me that ALL pythons get big enough to eat their owners. Oh, and of course ALL snakes are "poisonous". Strangely enough they get annoyed when I tell them I know a little more about snakes than they do and that they are talking out of their behind. So for those of you who keep dangerous monster 18 foot ball pythons, bearded dragons that can "get as big as a man" honest, and tarantulas that carry enough venom to kill a human being, what urban myths have you heard about reps, amphibs and invertebrates and which ones annoy you the most? Oh yeah, and chameleons explode if you put them up to a tartan background!!! I HATE glass tappers. Drives me nuts!
Another question about a possible urban myth? I've often read and heard about an alleged study or studies that claim to "prove" that when hospitalized patients are prayed for, they improve, even if they don't know that they are the objects of prayer. But, these "studies" are never identified. Is this claim simply an urban myth?
Did Mariah Carey do this or is it an urban myth? I've heard this from a few different people, is it just an urban myth? Mariah Carey once had surgery on her vocal chords to improve her range when singing. First, is this kind of operation even possible? Second, did she have it done? Assuming it is possible, would someone who makes a living from singing risk something going wrong for the sake of having a greater range? But models have cosmetic surgery, and they would lose work if it went horribly wrong, so why not a singer?
Can X-Ray film beat speed cameras, or is this an urban myth? I think this is an urban myth, but my friend swears a nurse she knows told her it works and loads of medical type people do it. The theory is, the speed camera cannot 'see' through undeveloped x-ray film placed over the car number plate. The number plate is supposedly still visible to the naked eye, however, so if a human cop sees you he or she will not notice anything amiss. My reason for thinking it is an urban myth is that if it was true, why don't we hear about people doing it? There are lots of people who would be lining up to take advantage of something like this if it was true. Her argument to that is, how would ordinary people get undeveloped x-ray film, it's only available via medical channels and those folks are used to keeping their mouths shut! If you have any facts, a web site, an informed opinion or just a good theory ~ please let me know. I'd really like to win this one :-D Please Note: I am NOT planning to try this, even if it is true! 1 week
